How to play Sudoku
The goal is to fill the 9×9 grid so that:
- Every row contains the numbers 1 to 9 exactly once.
- Every column contains the numbers 1 to 9 exactly once.
- Every 3×3 box contains the numbers 1 to 9 exactly once.
To play:
- Tap or click an empty cell to select it. Its row, column and box are gently highlighted.
- Tap a number on the number pad to place it. On a computer, you can also type 1–9 and move with the arrow keys.
- Turn on Notes to write small pencil marks for numbers you are considering.
- Use Erase to clear a cell, and Hint if you need a little help.
The small number in the corner of each key shows how many of that number are still left to place.
Choosing your difficulty
- Easy: many numbers are already filled in. Perfect for beginners or a quick, relaxing break.
- Medium: fewer starting numbers, so you will need to think a few steps ahead.
- Hard: a real challenge for experienced players, with the fewest clues.
Sudoku tips for beginners
- Start with the busiest areas. Look for rows, columns or boxes that already have many numbers – they have the fewest possibilities.
- Scan for each number. Pick a number, such as 5, and check every box to see where it can and cannot go.
- Find the only option. If a cell can only hold one possible number, place it with confidence.
- Use notes on harder puzzles. Writing down candidates makes patterns much easier to spot.
- Never guess too early. Sudoku is about logic. If you feel stuck, look at a different area of the grid.
